What to watch on Netflix

What to watch on Netflix

Netflix is pretty much always on in our house.  Stuart and I love watching TV and we are always on the lookout for a new series.  Over the years we have watched a fair few series, and since becoming parents it has become our little sanctuary.  Once Oliver’s in bed we switch on Netflix and switch our brains off.  In the early days of being a mother I would stick a series on the TV and binge watch it whilst staring at my tiny little baby. Nowadays we are always on the lookout for a new series, because quite frankly we have watched nearly all of them.

Here are my top picks:

Stranger Things

A few weeks ago we were trying to find a new series, and we stumbled across this.  We had both heard good things about Stranger Things so we thought we would give it a try.  Well we watched the whole series in 3 evenings.  It was hard to tear ourselves away from the screen.  The series focuses on a young boy who goes missing and the investigation into his disappearance.  Supernatural occurrences are happening around the town and his friends and family try to bring him back to this world with the assistance of a psychokinetic girl who appears.  We have just finished the first season and are eagerly anticipating the second!

Orange is the New Black

This is a classic Netflix series.  If you haven’t heard of it, I don’t know where you’ve been for the past few years.  It’s based on the story of Piper Chapman, a middle class American, who was sent to prison for a drug smuggling crime she had committed ten years previously.  It follows her life in Lichfield prison, and her relationships with the other inmates.  I love that it doesn’t just follow Piper’s story, but also gives a backstory for all the other inmates, making you realise the aren’t just heartless criminals, but humans too.  It is a brilliant series, which can have you laughing, crying and sat on the edge of your seat.

Once Upon a Time

I love this series, and it’s one I have been watching since the early days. Every episode is based on a different fairytale, but they make the fairytale a bit more grown up and modern.  They weave the ongoing story into each fairytale and they blur the lines between the various stories.  For example; Rumplestiltskin is the Beast and the Evil Queen is in love with Robin Hood.   All the fairytale characters live in the fictional town of ‘Storyville’ and work together to keep evil from taking over.  This series is good, easy viewing and always leaves me wanting more.  It’s really easy to binge on.

Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life

Well what can I say, I am a HUGE Gilmore Girls fan.  I remember my sister and I used to watch it every day when we got home from school.  We were absolutely gutted when E4 stopped showing it.  I really didn’t like the way the final season ended, so I was excited to see how they would finish the Gilmore Girls franchise.  They didn’t disappoint at all, although I wish they had made just a few more episodes!  The ending was perfect, although I really wish it wasn’t the end!  The quick witted, fast paced relationship between Laurelai and Rory never gets old!

Prison Break

This is probably Stuart and my favourite series.  We actually have the whole of the series on DVD, as we were introduced to it by one of our friends a fair few years back.  We have re-watched it a few times, and when we saw it on Netflix we decided to watch it again!  As the name suggests it follows a prison break, a man is wrongfully imprisoned and his brother decides to break him out and bring down ‘the company’ who saw him convicted.  Bringing a few other convicts along for the ride , there’s plenty of action, suspense and a fair few moments that have you on the edge of your seat.  The new series starts next month on TV, so I’m sure it won’t be long until Netflix scoops it up!

Dexter

My brother in law introduced us to good old Dexter!  Dexter is a blood splatter expert based in a Miami police station.  In his spare time he tracks down the murderers and kills them (obviously only once he knows they’re definitely guilty).  His sister and cop friends have no idea about his double life, however his adoptive father knew his secret.  He is definitely the best serial killer, always covering his tracks and never getting caught.  Of course the big story is will he or won’t he get caught?  You will have to watch and find out!

Jessica Jones

Based on the Marvel comic, following the story of Jessica Jones, superhero turned private investigator.  She’s hired to investigate the disappearance of a student, when she realises that the person she disappeared with is a figure from the past.  The mind controlling ‘Kilgrave’ seems to be trying to pull Jessica back under his power, but she is trying her best to bring him down.  We love a Marvel movie in this household, so we found it easy to follow the TV series.  I’m looking forward to see what they do with season 2!

So there we have it, my top Netflix picks.  What are your favourite series?  Anything new you suggest I watch?  Let me know in the comments!
